    @r3tarddownunder @MehreenFaruqi Do not listen to this idiot. Privatisation has not failed. Privatisation reduced bloated government inefficiency and is the reason why ASIC, Telstra and many other organisations have streamlined their bloated costs. If you want to blame someone for Telstra’s issues, blame the exponential growth in Australia’s population. This has driven demand for services far beyond current supply. Infrastructure upgrades require resources — time, money and a capable workforce — to meet the new demand curve. Infrastructure does not magically appear just because something is suddenly managed by a corporation instead of the government.

    There has been no fresh commercial announcement between $ASTS and Telstra (ASX:TLS), although Telstra now appears on the AST website! Still, these numbers from Telstra’s current $SPCX Starlink-powered satellite service are pretty interesting: 26m+ satellite texts sent or received. 2.9m+ customers connected at least once. 200k+ connections per day, up from 80k at launch. Weekends and holidays are the busiest periods. Telstra has around 24.9m retail mobile and device services, so roughly 12% of its entire base has already connected via satellite in just 13 months. Australia itself only has a population of around 28m. Obviously this is Starlink, not ASTS, and these are users rather than paying satellite subscribers. But the bullish read-through is pretty clear. Theres obviously an announcement Incoming and demand for direct-to-device connectivity is not theoretical, even in a relatively small country with strong existing mobile coverage. If other regions see anything close to the same adoption, the potential usage across AST’s 3b+ partner subscriber base becomes pretty ridiculous.

    @Batman2242 I remember before Telstra (telecom) at the time was privatised, phone calls and line rental was expensive. Since the phone network was opened up and privatised phone deals are way cheaper

    @QBCCIntegrity Mine didn't even go off. Telstra gave a warning about interruptions to the service where I was at work.

    Ookla: DIRECT-TO-DEVICE COMES OF AGE IN ASIA PACIFIC 🛰📲 Satellite direct-to-device (D2D) service, which enables smartphones to connect directly to satellites in areas lacking terrestrial coverage, is expanding rapidly across the Asia Pacific region. The region’s first carrier-run nationwide satellite texting service launched with New Zealand’s One NZ in December 2024. By mid-2026, six Starlink-based commercial services operated across four markets: One NZ, Telstra (Australia), KDDI/SoftBank/NTT Docomo (Japan), and Globe (Philippines, launched June 2026) Australia and New Zealand showed the highest activity. Detected users averaged 25.7 and 23.0 scans per month (Jan–Jun 2026)—near daily contact. Usage rose through the southern warm season (peaking in April) and fell in winter, reflecting outdoor recreation and remote work in coverage gaps. These levels far exceed denser markets like the UK (~4 scans/month) and match Canada’s high reliance. Philippines held the region’s largest detected D2D base (64% in Q2 2026), with activity detected from January 2026—months before commercial launch. Pre-launch growth reflected testing and opportunistic registrations. Population scale and disaster needs (e.g., earthquakes, ~20 tropical cyclones yearly) drive demand; Globe offered free access during a June 2026 Mindanao quake. Per-capita and frequency of use remained lower than Australia’s. Japan has the broadest free access (three operators) yet lowest sustained use. Detected base in June 2026 was about half its July 2025 level; users averaged only 7.6 scans/month. High urbanization and >99.9% population terrestrial coverage limit exposure to gaps. Operator figures (e.g., Docomo’s 5 million connected users) are higher but measure one-time connections across iOS/Android. Services function mainly as retention tools.

    Since the @Telstra outage, the mobile coverage of the Telstra network has dropped significantly & also slowed significantly.

    @KutthroatSosa @nemagovau Pretty sure the old one only used Telstra network (as it was a licenced Telstra product). Maybe this one broadcasts on all, which would solve a lot of the distribution issue. And in an emergency, a few minutes can mean a lot.
