@LesStonehouse @Optus There is, I think I remember correctly, a period of up to 48 hours where a new service replicates across a WAN (wide area network).

@Mephiston @Optus @DavidJay_AU That’s not relevant. If I get your bank details and your person information I don’t need a stupid password to get access to your bank account

@ACTINOSProject @RossFloate @Optus Insouciance is the perfect description. Now they're blaming the breach on a systems programmer where the lack of multi layer security is the problem. High level heads need to roll 🙆

Just spoke to @abcnews about the Optus data breach. There is no such thing as human error. There are only systems failures. It should not have been possible for a single human making a single mistake to cause this much damage. #optusfail

@TomSear Okay, let's say there are valid national security reasons for validating who is using such a service. Once the validation check is complete, and Optus/Telsra/... got your name/details in your system, why do they need to keep copies of these documents?

@steleki255 @KatherineDeves_ @SkyNewsAust I've always been bemused by the insistence on gathering info such as birth dates. People can be "ID'd" over the phone by a series of general questions (eg fave song, first job etc etc). I'm an Optus customer & I'm mortified by the data breach.

Looking through the Optus hack, that is a massive oof. But why isn't **** and test network separated? Even my baokao has seperate **** and test dbs lmao and none of it is critical. And how do you accidentally expose an API? Permissions? Network segmentation? Firewalls?! Ugh

Optus's failure to put in place systems and processes to prevent this situation from happening is not something any customer can control. The fault is Optus's and they must bear the consequences for their failure. #optusfail
