  @jen_browning @Telstra This week they have been doing maintenance on the mobile network while the NBN has been at its worst. I have missed 2 meetings because of drop outs where I get SOS only when home wifi is not working to mobile and countless hours of the wheel of death while items are loading.

  @SophiaMoermond When John Howard defeated Paul Keating in the 1996 election, Australia's federal debt was $97B. He sold assets (like Telstra) plus set about paying down the debt. The debt was cleared in 2006 and our savings began. The Rudd govt inherited $17B.

Mate, let's get this straight.Australia's structural budget issues blew out post-GFC and especially under recent big-spending governments — not from Howard paying down $96b in inherited debt while running surpluses. Howard left the budget in strong shape with low debt and a Future Fund seeded. Today's deficits (still projected around 1% of GDP with net debt heading to ~20%+) come from exploding recurrent spending: NDIS, aged care, welfare, and public sector bloat — not a lack of 'productivity policy' from the 90s/00s. Howard-era asset sales (Telstra etc.) shifted assets to private hands where they often delivered better efficiency and innovation — exactly what boosts productivity. Privatisation and microeconomic reforms in the 80s-90s drove Australia's strong productivity surge in the late 90s/early 00s. Blaming today's slump on "record low infrastructure spending" 25-30 years ago is the real stretch. Recent productivity stagnation (labour productivity near flat since ~2016-17, weakest in decades) has clear modern drivers:Services shift — healthcare, education, public admin (non-market sectors) now dominate and have abysmal productivity growth. The constraint isn't some 1990s "under-spend"; it's getting value for money, avoiding waste, and prioritising high-return projects over recurrent blowouts. Private sector dynamism, competition, and sensible tax settings deliver productivity far more reliably than more government "facilitation" funded by structural deficits. You know what actually restricts productivity policy? Promising endless spending while ignoring incentives, efficiency, and evidence. Structural deficits today crowd out future options through higher interest and taxes — not the other way around." This keeps it punchy, factual, and directly dismantles the causal link while flipping the deficit argument.

  @RizviAbul Well given Telstra and CBA both have an extraordinary number of retail shareholders either , individuals, trusts or superannuation funds numbering in the hundreds of thousands if not millions , many Australians would be aware of the CGT and franking credits but there was never any need for the vast majority to worry about a tax return given not having to declare dividends under a certain amount and the easy calcUlation with the CGT discount .... Now it’s a lot more complicated and non compliance will come with threats so please don’t be so dismissive when for some it is a big deal

  @laughingconser1 @jockie_c They sold more than just the retail arm of Telstra which is the problem; they were a monopoly unlike CBA and Qantas. They also sold gold reserves and our airports. Privatised public debt, and despite all this embarrassingly handed over a structural deficit. Incompetence.

  Working in regional NSW today and only @Telstra users could make calls. Optus: no signal. Vodafone: non‑existent. 2026 and we still don’t have a shared rural network? When one telco holds all the coverage, it’s not a choice - it’s a monopoly. #WakeUpAustralia #NannyStateNSW
