@7NewsAustralia Comrades, I want to congratulate you for calling this a data breach as @Optus are working pretty hard to have everyone call this a cyber attack. I guess they are out to stop the brand damage as it seems like this was un-hashed PII which should have been hashed, best practice?

@BenFordhamLive @trevorlong I'm with Optus. Cyber attack was on 21st. They notified media late yesterday & won't be sending emails or MSM to customers unless the customer's details are compromised. This is another reason to resist the global push for a Digital ID system. Scary!😨

The Optus response as reported on the ABC is incredible. “We lost enough of your data for bank accounts to be opened in your name, so you might wanna look out for that if you think that would be a bad thing”.

My take on the potential Optus data breach: I’m thrilled that a critical infrastructure asset operator only potentially suffered a PII breach, not a disruptive event (whether malicious/non-malicious*). And shut it down + let the authorities know.

I ain’t no optus defender, shits ******, but things like still having ex customer data for a period of time is required by federal government AML/Terror laws. Maybe if we weren’t such a big brother state……
