    @toninicho I am now, seriously, thinking of changing my carrier after years of being with Optus Problem is Telstra cost me a first full money last time I was with them and I dropped Vodaphone over their poor customer service.

    @tim_blee You would think that if you relied on the mobile network to receive payments then you would have a backup should the particular network fail. Maybe have an Optus or Vodafone SIM card handy or re-route your payment system to the NBN? No sympathy for unprepared businesses.

    @PGJohnson77 @Adrian_Arciuli @FIFAWorldCup Adelaide Oval and Optus are fine because AO is narrow and Optus has raised seats. Agree that the MCG is a very poor viewing experience.

    isn't this like the third major nationwide outage where "oh **** people couldn't even dial 000" from telstra and optus in like two years

    @borisstephens Firstly, taxes do not fund government spending, critical misconception the establishment perpetuates on purpose to justify austerity. Secondly, you're right to say that just throwing money at problems does not automatically fix anything. You still need competent management and a plan. All nationalisation does at a baseline is remove the profit motive that leads to cutting corners on network maintenance to save money, which is what leads in part to outages like this. And I haven't just proposed renationalisation, I've also proposed using Optus' satellite expertise to create a publicly-owned, privacy-first satellite internet network to challenge Starlink.

    @MelbOnTransit @Urban_Immerser Why don't V/line use a back up telco provider beside telstra? So if one goes down they got some form of commication. V/Line should back up Telstra with Optus in case on goes out!

    A guy moved into a new apartment. Only “official” internet was FTTN NBN — $90/month for a pathetic 30 Mbps down max. He called Telstra and Optus. Both said “5G Fixed Wireless not available at your address.” He checked a cell tower map anyway. Half a dozen towers within a couple km.     @clarkes signing that deal last year for tpg to operate over Optus networks in regional areas. So that's good. We need to come up with a way for network failovers when these incidents happen. But it's tricky... if the biggest operator goes down, how would this work in practice.
