  @JH_Otway_Ranges @FranMooMoo Hanlon’s Razor or whatever razor that states never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity. Optus staff literally left a URL public that was supposed to be private and someone stumbled on it.

  Here in Australia we’ve got the semi-annual hand wringing over cellular carriers and emergency calls - is it time to ditch SS7 for VoIP/SIP and switch from single operator SIM from Telstra/Optus to multi-operator SIM like SimBase or ThingsMobile?

  A guy moved into a new apartment. Only “official” internet was FTTN NBN — $90/month for a pathetic 30 Mbps down max. He called Telstra and Optus. Both said “5G Fixed Wireless not available at your address.” He checked a cell tower map anyway. Half a dozen towers within a couple km.   The fact that the emergency AusAlert didn’t reach Optus customers who had no Optus coverage, despite Telstra towers being available, is absurd. An emergency warning system should use any available network to deliver life-saving alerts—not fail because your own carrier is down. In a disaster, network loyalty shouldn’t determine who gets warned. This needs to be fixed before the next emergency.
