It raised $60bn to sell the assets, then we spent $60bn on NBN Co just to regain access to the assets sold and duplicate/upgrade the network we sold - and Telstra has paid something like $80-85bn in shareholder dividends along the way. In many respects, NBN shouldn't exist. It should have been the $80-85bn in "shareholder dividends" to the Public Owner that paid for the fibres to be laid - not a $60bn investment after a $60bn sale. But NBN was forced to be created after a now-shareholder-owned Telstra responded to how it might build a national broadband network with a non-compliant 12 page letter effectively saying "we won't - the copper wires are our privately-owned monopoly and we want to protect our market monopoly".

Anthony (@AnthonyPHoran) reported@jarro56 @isaacfloyd13 The NBN was flawed from the start but it sounds good so it had widespread public support. High speed internet would have been delivered by private sector with some govt support for rural Australia & it would have almost certainly been done quicker & cheaper.

At least once a day, but usually several times a day, the service drops out. Previously reported; NBN ‘tested’ & says it’s OK. IT IS NOT. … 1/2

John Harrison 🇦🇺 🦘 (@JH_Otway_Ranges) reported@TopherField I'm in regional Victoria and there's NBN fixed wireless, someone has to come to your home, drill holes and install cables and a antenna on the roof that's if you are in line of sight of the tower, it is slow, people around me have just got Starlink instead, it's a game changer

The company made profit the moment I gave NBN Co and TPG/AAPT the flick. Never have seen consumers been ripped off collectively with the silent approval of a regulator.
