@chrisjej @8DavezAWeekes +1 this. The National Fibre Optic Network was fully costed by government owned Telstra at $8bn and to be completed by 2002. "Privatisation forces the discipline of the market." Exactly. The market decided that the NFON wasn't worth the effort and never built it. Good stuff.

@AlexBallhausen Yes. Worked in Dubbo for 3 years. I was with Optus so phone went down about 10km out of town. Telstra work phone was better- worked for maybe 20km past the 60km zone. Absolutely appalling coverage in the country.
