Your history lesson is sloppy: partial sales started under Hawke/Keating Labor, final tranches under Howard. But that was 20 years ago. Albanese has been “fixing the LNP/PHON mess” since 2022 — and the result under his watch is a software bug that wiped out 600+ Triple Zero calls, stopped trains, triggered hundreds of welfare checks, and may have killed someone. Blaming 1997–2006 ghosts while your government fails to enforce basic oversight on critical infrastructure today is pure deflection. Stop whitewashing another Labor failure, puppet.

A software defect triggered a nationwide meltdown on 8 July 2026: 600+ Triple Zero calls failed, V/Line trains halted, payments and services crashed, hundreds needed welfare checks, and police are investigating a death potentially linked to it. Telstra itself admitted a secondary Triple Zero fault the next day. Your desperate “privatised decades ago, not our problem” line is pure hack deflection. The federal government has statutory oversight, regulatory power, and contractual responsibility for critical emergency infrastructure right now under Labor. Stop peddling ABC-grade spin for a clapped-out regime that can’t even keep Triple Zero working. Crawl back to your echo chamber.

  @Bigly20 @Caitlen2310 The Guardian asks why hasn't the government acted on regulations since the Optus outage last year? I ask what did the Coalition do about regulations after the Telstra outages in 2016 & 2018? What private discussions and/or guarantees did they obtain from Telstra after those events? In 2018 Triple Zero calls dropped out across 5 states for 10 hours. If it were so simple why didn't the Coalition insist on Telstra installing back up systems? Maybe we need a Royal Commission (joke).

  @EVERALDATLARGE As ever, @australianlabor will hide behind "the responsible use of taxpayers' money" not to use targeted ownership to regain parts of Telstra. What happens there is another outage? Is it acceptable to just let people die? Don't think so.

  @MikeCarlton01 @Telstra Telstra should never have been privatised. If it was still in public hands we’d have 100% mobile coverage across the nation today. Instead we have a cabal of privateers who cherry pick lucrative parts of our geography & then provide substandard services at Rolls Royce prices

  @GoodyPunch @BilsonhBilson Who, Telstra or the government? If the latter, that is a ridicoulos claim. Selling it holus bolus was probably a really bad idea in the first place. Guess which government did that over 25 years ago.
