calle (@callebtc) reportedPSA: purchased a phone number for @signalapp registration at @smspoolnet but the number got re-sold to a scammer else after 3 months. that person took over the signal account. super dangerous. terrible service guarantee by smspool and dangerous auth practice by signal . basically sim swapping without the social engineering. not your phone network, not your number (you can't own a mobile number).

If those users' Signal accounts hadn't been phished, it's likely at some point in the near future those same users' accounts on some other service would be phished as the same vulnerable point of entry (the user themselves) remains.

not_cyotee (@NCyotee) reported@aaron0v @signalapp Simple, Signal controls your keys, and the app delivery lifecycle. Yes, it is OS, and anyone can compile and run it. For now. They systematically shut down any popular alternate builds. And they obfuscate the compiled code. You have to use their servers, so at any point they can change the underlying behavior by pushing and update. And the simple fact, if they can recover your key for you, you have no guarantee they can't recover your key for themselves. Matrix allows any client. You control your key. No recovery. If you lose your key, you lose access to all your old messages.

It’s an #OpSec issue / if you’re concerned - security is not one app it’s an entire process.
