@HBOMaxHelp We have all broken production at some point, I nuked a server so successfully once as a junior engineer we had to change racks. Welcome to the club... I suspect there are t-shirts somewhere and if not there should be.

@jayesspea @WealthyCFO @HBOMaxHelp I work for the government. Reply all and "mass" lists (whole office, whole clunty) are the absolute bane of my existence. 1,000 people replying all to tell everyone to stop replying all makes fro an annoying day.

@TheIAMNinja @SnowWolfDesign @hbomax Isn’t that HBO’s responsibility? They should not allow brute force attacks. If someone tries to login into my account a million times and fails, maybe HBO should disable the account and send me a warning? It’s what banks do, and hopefully HBO isn’t completely stupid.

@HBOMaxHelp Once I accidentally sent an endless stream of notifications to a few 100s of users ‘cause the conditions I had applied to check if the notif had already been sent were not sufficient. Had to deploy a fix ASAP, scariest 20 mins of my life at the time, but it ended all ok

@HBOMaxHelp Blaming the intern, or any one engineer shows a serious lack of leadership. There should have been systems preventing built years ago. It should have been on a product roadmap, along with other embarrassing potential failures, and made impossible. Terrible messaging.

As @hbomax are taking an intern’s very public error in good stride, what was your worst work mistake? We’re you forgiven for it or we’re you reprimanded? Mine was authorising a credit customer’s £14k stationery order that turned out to be a bit less than kosher. Was forgiven.

Dear @hbomax Why don’t you have 2 factor authentication??? Someone logged in to MY CANCELED ACCOUNT and updated information that ISN’T THEIRS!!! And no one on your end will help me! #Help

@HBOMaxHelp The intern "did it", but it wasn't their fault. That's on the setup that allowed it to happen. That said, systems are hard and even with "least privilege" in place, there's always *someone* with enough access to cause trouble. The main thing is no-one should get in trouble.

Hope no one gets in too much trouble for the Integration Test Email #1 @hbomax. We've all been there, we all get it.

@HBOMaxHelp Hello intern! I work with expensive, advanced technology and I broke something as an intern and lost several nights of sleep over it. I offered to pay to replace it. My boss waved it off. Everyone in my field has broken something and everything is expensive. We get thru it!

@HBOMaxHelp Back in the days when virtualization was still young I was playing around on one of the production servers. Unfortunately one of the N technologies at that time had shutdown command named "destroy", for the other technology it meant the obvious...

@HBOMaxHelp Dear intern, I once underquoted a client for work which cost my company thousands of £££$$$. The world will keep turning while we fluff up our lines in life, don't worry about it.

@HBOMaxHelp To the intern, Been there. During an in place database upgrade and normalization the team I was on forgot to account for the quality of the data in a table and it ended up causing the upgrade to run far longer than expected. Quick fix found, but shouldn’t have happened.

@HBOMaxHelp Dear Intern, If interns can make mistakes in Production, that's not the fault of the intern, it's not a "mistake". It's the fault of the employer. They shouldn't be "helping you through it". They should be getting help to lock down their **** environment properly.

@HBOMaxHelp Dear Intern, I was testing a script in **** instead of test and truncated a lot the data in our customers table so several could use their site instance. Fortunately I stopped it about half way through and was able to fix it. Brush this one off.

@HBOMaxHelp Or was it a configuration change? If so, do you enforce reviews of config changes? Fix that. When I was first at Facebook, the whole site could be brought down by a Sitevar change, and was, until changes to config were forced to be reviewed

@simAlity @smackdown @HBOMaxHelp Except you should anticipate that test environments and interns shouldn't have direct access to run on production data. This is evidence of what is likely an endemic problem that needs correction.

@HBOMaxHelp Dear intern: I once rolled a change to production which eventually DoS'd our own site and then we left for a conference. It was fun. Not. This happens in this line of work and we make our systems more resilient as a result -- which avoids much worse so it's a win at the end.

@HBOMaxHelp Tell this intern to find me when they graduate and are ready for full time work. They’ve already made the error every marketer dreads and had it called out. Now they are ready take on anything an email program could possibly throw at them.

@HBOMaxHelp Developed software for 20 years. In that time I have managed to: - Written off a production server - Deleted critical data by mistake - Broken more production builds than I can count - Sent test emails to clients It happens. Each time we mess up we add safeguards.

@rakyll @HBOMaxHelp Lol. Many years ago I got a call that our service was down with a strange error message. I pulled it up at home, “that’s odd, that error could really only happen if *important* table is missing. Oh.” We teased the dropper about it a bit, but no consequences.
